Portable Storage Containers in Boulder County

Boulder County has some of the oldest housing stock on the Front Range sitting right next to some of its newest construction, and both keep us busy. We deliver 8'x16' steel containers to Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Niwot and the Boulder County side of Erie, coming up US-36 and the Diagonal.

Renovation is the dominant story here. Older homes in central Boulder and Longmont get opened up, additions get built, and the contents of a house have to live somewhere for a few months. Parking is tight and city storage is expensive, which is why a container on the driveway tends to beat renting a unit and making a dozen trips.

Tight Streets, Careful Placement

Central Boulder and old-town Longmont were not laid out with delivery trucks in mind. We would rather talk through the approach first — driveway width, overhead lines, tree cover, whether the alley is usable — than show up and find we cannot place the container. A photo of the spot is usually enough for us to give you a clear answer.

If there is genuinely nowhere on the property, we will store your loaded container in our secure yard and bring it back when the work is finished. See our Boulder storage page for more on service inside the city.

How a Boulder County delivery goes

We come up from our Brighton yard on our own truck. Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior and Erie sit inside our flat move-fee radius; central Boulder and points west may be charged by the mile, and we tell you which applies when we look at the address.

Placement is the conversation in this county. Central Boulder and old-town Longmont have narrow streets, alleys, mature trees and overhead lines, so we want a photo of the spot before we book. We need a level space roughly a car and a half long with a clear approach overhead. In Louisville, Lafayette, Superior and the newer parts of Longmont, driveways are standard width and the job is usually simple.

If the container has to go in the street, that is a city right-of-way question and each city sets its own rule. If there is nowhere on the property, we store the loaded unit at our gated yard and bring it back when the work is done. The unit is month to month.

Before delivery day: clear the spot, look up for tree limbs and overhead lines, and if the unit is going anywhere near the street check the city's rule first. Send a photo of the frontage and the alley if there is one. Have a contact number ready for the driver. In central Boulder, a few minutes of planning ahead of time is the difference between a simple placement and a second trip.

Renovations, rebuilds and the university calendar

Boulder County's older homes are being opened up, added on to and in some cases scraped and rebuilt, and each of those means the contents of a house have to live somewhere for months. A container on the driveway keeps them dry and locked a few steps from the door. For a scrape-and-rebuild where nothing can stay on the lot, we hold the loaded unit at our yard until there is a house to bring it back to.

The other rhythm here is the university. Move-ins and move-outs cluster in August and May, and a container that loads over a week and waits at our yard over the summer is a calmer answer than a storage unit across town and two truck rentals.

The container is welded steel with a gasketed door seal, which handles the wet spring snow and the wind that comes off the foothills.

Load it evenly. We picked up a container for a woman moving out of Boulder who had put every canned good she owned along one wall and the furniture along the other. One side was far heavier than the other, which makes lifting and hauling the unit unsafe. Spread heavy items across the floor and front to back. If you have water storage, drain it first.

A Boulder fact: the containers themselves are built in Boulder County. Boxwell, the manufacturer of every Velox unit, is based here, so a container delivered to a Boulder driveway has come home.

Boulder County storage FAQ

Can you place a container on a narrow street in central Boulder?

Sometimes. Send a photo of the frontage and the alley if there is one. If the unit would sit in the public street, the city's right-of-way rules apply; on your own driveway or pad, no permit is normally needed.

Is the move fee flat in Longmont and Louisville?

Yes. Both are inside the 30-mile flat-fee radius from our Brighton yard. Central Boulder and the mountain communities to the west may be charged by the mile. The monthly rate on the container is the same everywhere.

Can you hold my belongings during a scrape-and-rebuild?

Yes. We take the loaded container to our gated yard and keep it there for as long as the build takes, then deliver it to the finished house. You pay the move fees in and out plus the monthly rate; the yard itself does not cost extra.

Do you deliver around the CU move-in and move-out weeks?

Yes, but those weeks fill up, so book early. Call 720-674-8777 as soon as you have your dates.

Will the container handle Boulder's spring snow?

Yes. The unit is welded steel with a gasketed door seal. Wet snow, hail and wind stay outside. We just ask that the drop spot be clear and level on delivery day.

What size container do you deliver in Boulder County?

One size: an 8-by-16-foot welded steel container that holds roughly three to four rooms. On a tight Boulder lot the single size is an advantage.
