Portable Storage Containers in Pleasant Grove, Utah

Pleasant Grove is one of the two Utah towns where we keep a yard, so a container here does not travel far to reach you. We drop an 8 by 16 foot steel container at your house, you load it on your own schedule, and we move it wherever it needs to go next or bring it back to the yard for storage.

Two very different Pleasant Groves, as far as a delivery truck is concerned

About a quarter of the homes in Pleasant Grove were built before 1980, and roughly one in eleven predates 1960. But two thirds of the city’s housing went up between 1990 and 2009, during the stretch when the population climbed from around 10,800 in 1980 to over 33,000 by 2010. That split matters when we plan a drop.

In the newer subdivisions on the west and north sides, driveways are wide, streets are generous, and placement is straightforward. In the old grid it is a different job. The Pleasant Grove Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1995, covers about sixteen blocks roughly bounded by 100 North, 500 South, 300 East and 100 West, with 134 contributing buildings. Those lots have narrow frontages, mature trees over the driveway, and in the Little Denmark area on the west side, small plots laid out for two-room houses in the 1860s. We would rather know about a tight approach before the truck is on your street than after.

The bench

Pleasant Grove sits on the Mount Timpanogos bench at about 4,623 feet, and the ground keeps climbing as you go east. The Grove Creek trailhead at the city’s eastern edge is 5,141 feet, so there is roughly 500 feet of rise across town. The neighborhoods below the canyons, Battle Creek and Scratch Gravel among them, sit on old alluvial fans built by water coming out of the mountains, which means slope and rock.

A container needs to sit level, both so the doors work and so the load does not shift. On a sloped driveway we will usually set it across the slope rather than along it, or find a flatter spot on the property. If your driveway drops noticeably toward the street, mention it when you call.

Do you need a permit?

Pleasant Grove City Code has no ordinance that mentions portable storage containers at homes, so there is no container permit to apply for and none we could find is required for your own driveway. The street is different: city code section 7-1-1 makes it unlawful to place any article in a street or sidewalk that obstructs it without express permission of the City Council. If your only workable spot is the street, start with Public Works at (801) 785-2941.

One rule that does apply on private property is the clear vision area for corner lots, city code section 10-15-10, which bars anything over three feet tall inside the sight triangle at a corner. A container is eight feet tall. If you are on a corner, we will place it away from the intersection side.

What people here actually use them for

  • Remodels in the old grid. Homes from the adobe and Victorian era get worked on constantly, and there is nowhere in a 1890s house to put the contents of two rooms.
  • Moving without the rushed truck rental. The container sits there. You load it over a week of evenings instead of one frantic Saturday.
  • Selling a house. Pulling half the furniture out before photos is the cheapest staging there is, and it has to go somewhere.
  • Strawberry Days. The festival runs the third week of June and the rodeo is the longest continually running one in the state. If you live near the park or the rodeo grounds, the week of the carnival is not the week to have a container in your driveway.

Neighborhoods we deliver to

The city recognises twelve historic neighborhoods, and locals still use the names: Old Fort, Battle Creek, Big Spring, Grove Creek, Little Denmark, Manila, Monkey Town, Mud Hole, North Field, Sam White’s Lane, Scratch Gravel and String Town. We deliver across all of them, plus the newer subdivisions off Pleasant Grove Boulevard and North County Boulevard.

Getting here

Pleasant Grove sits between Lindon to the south and American Fork to the north, with I-15 to the west at Exit 275 and Pleasant Grove Boulevard running in from the freeway. Our yard is in town, which keeps delivery and pickup short compared with running a container up from the valley.

Our Pleasant Grove yard is by the fairgrounds

Our second Utah lot sits right next to the Pleasant Grove fairgrounds. If you’re at Strawberry Days, look south and you can see the containers. That yard is why American Fork, Lindon, Cedar Hills and the north end of the county get such fast delivery from us.

The container on the ridge

A professional athlete bought a big section of mountainside above town and cut a small trail up it. He had us deliver a container to the top of the ridge, where he stores his gear. The truck very nearly got stuck. We got it up there and it’s still there. If you’re on the bench and wondering whether your driveway is too steep, it almost certainly isn’t — we just take it slowly.

How we used to do it

When Velox started, deliveries were done with a rollback tow truck. One of the hardest early jobs was a woman moving into a Pleasant Grove apartment complex: unloading a container into a single apartment parking stall took hours with that setup. Today a mule — a small machine that lifts the container off the truck and drives it into place — does the same job in minutes, more safely, and without dragging anything across your parking lot or driveway.
