Containers and Orem’s rules, honestly

For years Orem’s city code listed shipping containers and “PODS or similar structures” among the things not allowed on a residential lot, with no exception for moving. In 2026 the city updated that rule, and in October 2026 Orem Planning walked us through how it works now.

Moving: a container can sit on your driveway for up to 15 days while you move in or out. It has to be on the driveway itself: not blocking the sidewalk, not in the street, and not on the landscaping. After 15 days it has to go, so plan to load within two weeks.

Remodel or disaster repair: the updated code doesn’t spell these out. Orem Planning told us in October 2026 that a container can stay at the house for up to a year with an active building permit and work that keeps moving. That’s staff guidance and not written in the code, so check with the city before a long project.

Delivering in Orem

Orem’s roads are busy, and people tend to drive through neighborhoods faster than they should. When we’re setting a unit we take a minute longer to cone off the spot and watch traffic. Otherwise it’s easy: compared with Provo, most Orem homes have plenty of room to place a container without touching the street.
