Portable Storage FAQ: Utah & Denver

Velox is a locally owned portable storage company serving most of Utah and the Colorado Front Range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs. We deliver a clean, all-steel 8×16 storage container to your home or job site, you load it once, and we either leave it on your property or move it to one of our gated yards until you need it. When you call or text, you reach the people who actually handle your container, not a national call center.

Simple: you call or text, we deliver an empty 8×16 container to your driveway (usually within 1–3 days), you load it at your own pace, and then you choose: keep it where it is, have us move it to your new place, or have us store it at our secure yard. When you’re done, we pick it up. Our truck stays on the street and a specialized machine lifts the container off and sets it exactly where you want it, so the container is never tipped or dragged like a dumpster.

We offer one size: an 8-foot by 16-foot all-steel container with about 800 cubic feet of space inside, roughly the footprint of a parking stall. Most people fit a 2–3 bedroom home or about 1,500 square feet of living space in one unit. How much fits really depends on how much you own, the size of your furniture, and how good you are at Tetris. If you’re not sure, get one, fill it, and only order a second if you need it. That way you only pay for what you use.

You pay a monthly rental rate plus a flat fee for each move (delivery, pickup, or a transfer to a new address). There are too many variables to post one number, so we quote each job. What changes the price: how many containers you need, how many months you keep it, how many moves you need, whether you’re outside our normal service radius, any add-ons like a lock, and your contents coverage level. We usually have a deal or two running, so ask. There’s no deposit, and your rate does not jump after the first month.

Usually. We typically deliver within 1–3 days, and next-day is common when the schedule allows. Late May through mid-August is our busiest stretch because families move while school is out and everyone wants projects done by fall, so during those months book a week or more ahead if you can. Call or text and we’ll tell you the soonest slot.

Yes, and most people do. Customers keep containers in the driveway during a remodel, between homes, while a new house is being built, during an estate cleanout, or just to declutter. It’s lockable, weather-sealed, and you have access any time you want because it’s right outside.

At one of our gated, secured yards in Utah or Colorado. Storing it there costs nothing extra beyond the move fee, so your monthly rate stays the same whether the container sits in your driveway or in our lot. This is also the answer if you don’t know where you’re moving yet: load it now, we’ll hold it, and we deliver it to your new address when you’re ready.

As long as you need. Rentals are month-to-month with no long-term contract. The minimum charge is one month, but you can have it picked up any time after that. Plenty of customers keep a unit for a weekend move; plenty of others keep one for a year while a new home is built.

Yes. Every unit is all-steel and weather-sealed to keep out rain and snow, and we’ve used them through Utah and Colorado winters for years. They are not climate-controlled, though. Load everything completely dry, use sealed plastic totes for moisture-sensitive items, and add a moisture absorber for longer storage. Keep temperature-sensitive or irreplaceable items like documents, electronics, artwork, and antiques with you or in climate-controlled storage.

For a driveway or your own property, almost never. For the street, it depends on the city. In practice most cities only get involved if someone reports it, and a short-term permit usually clears it up. HOA rules vary a lot, so ask your HOA before delivery. If you run into trouble, call us and we’ll help you figure out the fastest fix.

In Utah, most of the state, from our yards in Springville and Pleasant Grove, including Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Tooele, Summit, Wasatch, and Washington counties and Sanpete County. Pricing rises a bit the farther out we drive, and we don’t currently serve Logan or Cache Valley. We deliver, move, and store the container. We don’t pack or load it for you. The upside is that you skip the rental truck and the double handling entirely, load on your own schedule, and let us do all the driving.

Absolutely. Restoration and insurance contractors use them for pack-outs, remodelers and builders for job-site storage, retailers for overflow inventory, and offices during renovations. We deliver directly to the site, and if you do this regularly we can set up account pricing. Ask us about partner accounts.

Standard credit and debit cards. Your card is charged the day before each scheduled service (delivery, monthly rental, pickup, or an extra move). A padlock, if you buy one from us, and our contents protection plan, if you use it, go on the same card. No deposit is required.

You load once. Traditional self-storage means renting a truck, making multiple trips, and loading and unloading everything twice. We deliver the container to your door, you fill it at your own pace, and we handle every move. Our customers most often mention three things afterward: how easy it was, how much fit, and that they could text one person for everything.

Start with one. A single 8×16 unit holds a typical 2–3 bedroom home. If you get to the end of loading and still have things left, we can bring a second one. Ordering two up front and only needing one is the mistake we see most often. One tip: the awkward stuff always goes in last, so plan space for grills, bikes, and patio furniture before you fill the whole floor.

Almost always. The container takes up about one parking stall, and our machine can place it anywhere a pickup truck could drive. Please clear the driveway of cars, low branches, and wires before we arrive. If you’re not sure whether it will fit, text us a photo of the spot. That’s genuinely the easiest way to book placement, and we’ll tell you right away whether it works.

Usually, yes. Concrete and asphalt are ideal, but compacted gravel, crushed rock, dirt, and grass all work as long as the ground is firm, level, and dry. Pavers are possible with some care. Sloped driveways are handled case by case, and unlike some national companies we don’t automatically refuse them. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a straight answer before delivery day.

We hear this on almost every call, and it’s rarely a problem. The container is set down gently by a machine, not dropped, dragged, or rolled off a truck. On concrete or asphalt in normal condition, damage is very unlikely. If you have decorative pavers or a freshly poured surface, tell us and we’ll talk through the best spot.

Often, yes. Most cities don’t actively police containers on the street unless a neighbor complains, and if that happens a simple permit usually solves it. HOAs are a different story: some are easy and some want to control everything, so check yours first. If you have a choice, the driveway is always the safest spot.

Book as early as you can. Next-day delivery is often available, and occasionally we can make same-day work depending on our schedule and your location. Loaded containers get priority, so an empty delivery may take a bit longer during busy weeks. The one situation that’s hard to save is the Friday afternoon at the end of the month before a holiday when someone just closed on a house and needs a container in the next hour. Yes, it’s happened.

No. As long as we have clear placement instructions and access to the container, you don’t need to be there. Our driver will contact you before arrival. If the spot is tight or unusual, it helps to be home or to send photos ahead of time so we get it right the first time.

Yes, our containers are built to be transported fully loaded. The load limit is 7,500 pounds, which is well above what a typical household uses. The average loaded unit weighs 3,000–4,000 pounds. For normal furniture and boxes, weight is never an issue. If you’re loading something unusually dense, such as a safe, machinery, a pallet of tile, or a big food storage supply, just mention it and we’ll plan for it.

No hazardous, flammable, explosive, illegal, or perishable items. That means no gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, ammunition, hazardous chemicals, or equipment with fuel in it. We also recommend keeping food, important documents, cash, jewelry, medications, and anything irreplaceable with you rather than in storage.

A lock isn’t included, but almost any standard padlock works. If you’d rather not make a trip to the hardware store, we can sell you one for about the same price when we deliver. Either way, you keep the only key.

They need to be, and there are two ways to cover them. If your homeowners or renters policy covers belongings in a portable storage container, just send us proof within 5 business days of delivery. If not, we’ll enroll you in our contents protection plan through Storage Protectors, with coverage levels from $2,000 up to $20,000. It covers things like theft, fire, windstorm and smoke, but it does not cover flood.

Yes, by appointment. Our yards are gated and locked, so call or text ahead and we’ll meet you there, open the gate, and lock up behind you. Because someone has to be on-site with you, we ask that visits stay reasonably short. If you need something out regularly, keeping the container at your home is usually the better setup.

If your garage is big enough, yes. Every winter a few customers have us set the container inside their garage so they can close the doors and load in the warmth instead of standing in slush. We’ve also placed units on gravel pads, at job sites, and once across a high school football field. If you have an unusual spot in mind, send us a photo.

No deposit and no long-term contract. We charge your card the day before each scheduled service. If a payment doesn’t go through, we’ll reach out and try again; if it still won’t clear after a few attempts, we’ll need to reschedule. That’s it. No hidden fees, no lock-in.

No. Your monthly rate stays the same for as long as you have the container. We’ve heard about the first-month teaser rates from national brands, and we don’t do that.

Just call or text. As long as the truck isn’t already on its way, we can usually shuffle the schedule without it being a big deal. Moving dates slip and closings get pushed. We’re local, so we don’t have to route your change through a national system to fix it.

A real person, every time. When you call or text Velox you reach one of the people who actually schedule and move your container, not a national call center and not an AI phone bot. That’s also who you’ll talk to if anything changes mid-move, which is where the big brands tend to fall apart.

People say “pod” for any portable storage container, the same way people say Kleenex for tissues. PODS is one national brand. Velox containers work the same way, delivered to you, loaded once, stored or moved, with a few differences: ours are all-steel 8×16 units, you talk to a local team, storage at our yard doesn’t raise your monthly rate, and we can move a container loaded up to 7,500 pounds.

Three things. Size: one Velox container has about 800 cubic feet inside, while a U-Box is 257, so you’d need roughly three U-Boxes to match one Velox unit. People: you deal with a local owner and team who handle your container themselves, not a call center. Flexibility: when your closing date moves or the driveway is steeper than expected, the person who answers the phone can actually fix it. When you compare prices, compare the whole job (rental, delivery, pickup, storage, extra moves) and the cubic feet, not the number of boxes.

Usually not once you count everything. With a self-storage unit you rent a truck, load your stuff, drive it, unload it into the unit, then do the whole thing again in reverse. With a Velox container you load once at your door, and if you want it stored at our yard the monthly rate doesn’t change. Most customers tell us the time and stress they saved was worth more than any price difference.
