PODS vs Velox in Denver: A Local Alternative for Moving and Storage

September 28, 2026

Updated by the Velox team

Short answer: PODS and Velox both set a container at your Denver home so you can load at your own pace. The differences that matter here are how much weight the container can carry (PODS lists 4,200 lbs for its 16-foot container; ours is rated for 7,500 lbs), how it fits on a tight central-Denver lot, and who you talk to when your dates move.

If you are moving out of Colorado, PODS is built for that and we are not. If you are moving, remodeling or restoring anywhere from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, here is how the two compare.

Weight: the difference Denver remodelers feel

A container’s weight limit is the most your belongings can weigh in total before it is unsafe to lift and haul. Heavy things use it up long before they fill the space.

A lot of what we deliver in Denver goes to restorations and remodels: a Denver Square in Park Hill taken back to the studs, a pop-top on a Wash Park bungalow. Those jobs pack heavy. Boxed tile, tools, hardware and shelves of books add up fast. PODS lists 4,200 lbs for its 16-foot container. A typical loaded Velox container weighs 3,000 to 4,000 lbs, and ours is rated for 7,500 lbs, so a heavy load does not force you into a second container.

Loading a safe, machinery, tile or concrete? Tell us before you load and we will talk it through.

Fitting a container on an older Denver lot

Central Denver has narrow streets, alleys and detached garages instead of wide driveways. Our truck stays on the road, and a machine lifts the container off and sets it level where you point. It is never tipped or dragged like a dumpster. You need about one parking stall of space and a clear approach overhead. Power drops, low branches and porch roofs are the usual limits on an older lot.

An alley apron or parking pad on your own property often works well. Not sure? Text us a photo of the front and the alley and we will tell you which spot works.

One rule applies whichever company you rent from: if the container sits on a city street, sidewalk or public alley, even in front of your own house, Denver requires a right-of-way permit from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. On your driveway or private property, you do not need one. More in do you need a permit for a storage container in Denver.

Who you talk to

With a national company you usually work through a customer care line and an online account. That works well for plenty of people, especially on a cross-country move.

Our Colorado work runs out of one yard in Brighton with a small local team. The person who answers can look at your address, tell you whether the alley works, and move your date. Need to change something? Call or text. That is fine unless the truck is already on its way.

Storing it away from your house

Both companies can take a loaded container away and store it for you. Ours goes to our gated yard in Brighton. Keeping it there does not raise the monthly rate; you pay the move fees in and out. You can visit by appointment: call or text ahead, and someone will meet you, unlock it and lock up after. That helps when a closing date slips and you are between houses.

How pricing works

Neither company posts one flat price, because the cost depends on the job. What changes a Velox quote: how many containers, how long you keep them, how many times they move, whether you are outside our normal delivery area, a tricky delivery spot, and add-ons like a lock or contents coverage. Denver addresses within 30 miles of our Brighton yard are one flat move fee. We usually have a few deals running, so ask.

Every Velox rental comes with no deposit, a one-month minimum, and a monthly rate that does not go up after the first month. Comparing quotes from anyone? Compare the total cost of the whole job, not just the first month. More on how Velox pricing works.

When PODS is the better choice

  • You are moving to another state. PODS ships nationwide. We do not.
  • You want a smaller container. PODS offers 8- and 12-foot sizes. We have one size.
  • You would rather manage everything online through a customer portal.

When Velox is the better choice

  • You are moving or remodeling between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs.
  • Your load is heavy: tools, tile, a safe, shelves of books.
  • The container will sit on site for months during a restoration or a new-home build.
  • Your lot is tight and you want someone to look at the photo before delivery day.
  • You want one local team to call or text instead of a support queue.

Frequently asked questions

Is Velox the same as PODS?

No. People call every portable storage container a “pod,” but PODS is a brand name. Velox is a separate, locally owned company with its Colorado yard in Brighton. More in why everyone calls them pods.

Do you deliver in Denver?

Yes, across Denver and the Front Range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs. Brighton to central Denver is usually about half an hour outside rush hour. See portable storage in Denver County.

Do I need a permit for a container in Denver?

Only if it sits on a city street, sidewalk or public alley. Then Denver requires a right-of-way permit. On your driveway or private property, no permit is needed.

Is Velox cheaper than PODS in Denver?

It depends on the job, so the honest answer is to get both quotes and compare the total cost from delivery to final pickup. Call or text us and you will get a real number from a real person.

What is the weight limit on a PODS container compared to Velox?

PODS lists 4,200 lbs for its 16-foot container. A Velox 8×16 container is rated for 7,500 lbs.
