Updated by the Velox team
Velox doesn’t insure what’s inside your container, but contents coverage is required, and there are two easy ways to have it. Send us proof that your homeowners or renters policy covers your belongings, or let us enroll you in our contents protection plan through Storage Protectors, with coverage from $2,000 to $20,000. Flood is not covered. A lock isn’t included either: any padlock works, and we sell one at hardware-store price.
Why contents coverage is required
A lot of people assume the storage company insures their stuff. We don’t, and neither do most companies like us. You pack the container, you lock it and you hold the key, so what’s inside stays your property and your responsibility.
That’s why our rental agreement requires contents coverage on every rental. It isn’t a sales pitch. It’s there so a break-in, a fire or a windstorm doesn’t leave you paying for everything yourself. The good news is that many people are already covered and only need to show it.
Your two coverage options
Option A
Use your own policy
If your homeowners or renters policy covers belongings in a portable storage container, send us proof within 5 business days of delivery.
Best for: homeowners whose policy already covers belongings stored away from the house.
Option B
Our contents protection plan
We enroll you through Storage Protectors. Pick a coverage level from $2,000 to $20,000. Every level has a $250 deductible.
Best for: renters, people between homes, or anyone whose policy doesn’t cover stored items.
One thing to know: if we don’t receive proof of your own coverage within 5 business days, you’re automatically enrolled at the minimum Storage Protectors level. That way your belongings are never sitting there with no coverage at all. You’ll see the coverage line clearly on your quote. Here’s everything else that affects your price.
Three questions to ask your insurance agent
- Does my policy cover my belongings inside a portable storage container parked at my home?
- Does it still cover them if the container is stored at the company’s yard?
- Can you send me something in writing that I can forward to the storage company?
If the answer to the first two is yes, Option A is probably your easiest path. If your agent isn’t sure, Option B removes the guesswork.
What our contents plan covers, and what it doesn’t
| Covered | Not covered |
|---|---|
| Burglary and vandalism | Flood |
| Fire, lightning, smoke and explosion | Items the rental agreement doesn’t allow in the container |
| Windstorm and hail | Anything not listed as a covered cause |
| Weight of snow, ice or sleet | |
| Falling objects, vehicles and sinkhole collapse | |
| Limited water damage |
This is a summary, not the policy. The full list of covered causes and exclusions is in the Storage Protectors summary of coverage. If flood is a real worry where you live, ask your own insurance agent about it.
What to keep out of the container anyway
Insurance pays you back for things. It can’t replace your grandmother’s photos. Our rental agreement says the container isn’t suitable for valuables, heirlooms, irreplaceable items, books, records, art, photos or anything with sentimental value. Keep those with you. Cash, jewelry, medications and important documents belong with you too.
Some things can’t go in at all: fuel, propane, chemicals, fireworks, ammunition, perishables, and anything wet, moldy or smoke-damaged. See the full list of what not to store in a portable container.
Locks: what to use

A lock isn’t included with the rental. Any padlock works, and if you’d rather not run to the store, we sell one at hardware-store price.
- Tougher is better. A disc lock or a padlock with a shrouded shackle (the metal loop is mostly covered) is much harder to cut than a basic padlock. The Storage Protectors enrollment form even asks what kind of lock you use.
- Keep a spare key. Store it somewhere other than your car.
- Lock it every time. Even if you’re only stepping inside the house for a few minutes.
- Close the doors all the way. The doors and roof are sealed, but they only keep rain out when they’re fully latched.
If your container is stored at our yard, there’s another layer of security: the lots are gated, and someone from our team meets you, unlocks the gate and locks up after. Visits are by appointment, so call or text ahead.

What about the container itself?
Contents coverage protects your belongings. The steel box is a separate question. While the container is at your property, you’re responsible for damage to it, the same as with most rentals. That rarely comes up, but if you’re worried about it, ask us about the container damage waiver when you book.
Using the container for a restoration job? The restoration company usually handles the rental. Our guide to what happens to your belongings after water or fire damage walks through how that works.
Questions people ask
Is my stuff insured in a portable storage container?
Not by Velox. Contents coverage is required, and you can either show proof of your homeowners or renters policy within 5 business days of delivery, or enroll in our Storage Protectors contents plan.
What happens if I don’t send proof of insurance?
If proof doesn’t arrive within 5 business days of delivery, you’re automatically enrolled at the minimum Storage Protectors coverage level.
Does the contents plan cover flood?
No. Flood is not covered. Burglary, fire, smoke, windstorm, hail, the weight of snow or ice and limited water damage are among the covered causes.
Do I need my own lock?
Yes. A lock isn’t included, but any padlock works. A disc lock or shrouded-shackle padlock is harder to cut. We also sell one at hardware-store price.
How much coverage can I get?
The Storage Protectors plan offers coverage levels from $2,000 up to $20,000, each with a $250 deductible. We’ll help you pick a level when you book.
