Short answer: A U-Haul U-Box is a small 5′ × 8′ container that holds 257 cubic feet and up to 2,000 lbs, and U-Haul recommends three of them for an average two-bedroom home. A Velox container is one 16′ × 8′ steel box with about 800 cubic feet inside, rated for 7,500 lbs. By volume, one Velox holds a little more than three U-Boxes’ worth. U-Box is the better tool for shipping across the country. Velox is simpler for moves, remodels and builds inside Utah and along Colorado’s Front Range.

The math: one container or three
Compare the space inside: about 800 cubic feet for Velox against 257 for a U-Box. One Velox container holds a little more than three U-Boxes of stuff, in a single box.
That changes how you load. With U-Boxes you split your house across several containers, and each one has its own 2,000 lb cap. Three U-Boxes add up to 6,000 lbs. One Velox is rated for 7,500. Long pieces like a sectional, a bed frame or lumber for a remodel can lie flat along more than 15 feet.
The heaviest thing Utah customers load is usually food storage: buckets of wheat, rice and beans, and cases of canned goods. In a small box, that weight adds up quickly.
It also changes your driveway. One Velox container takes about one parking stall. Every U-Box needs a flat spot a forklift can reach, and if they won’t all fit at once, U-Haul charges a separate delivery fee for each extra drop.
Walls, weather and storage
U-Haul runs two U-Box models: a steel frame with composite panels, and a plywood box with a vinyl cover. U-Haul says both are built for airflow and weather resistance, and you can’t request one or the other. Every Velox container is all steel.
When the container is not at your house, U-Box containers are kept indoors in U-Haul facilities. U-Haul says those buildings are insulated but not climate controlled, and many locations can give you same-day or next-day access at no charge. Velox containers are kept at our gated yards. Visits are by appointment, and keeping your container there does not raise the monthly rate.

Who you talk to
U-Haul handles U-Box changes through your online account, the U-Haul app, or a text line to its support team. That is convenient, and it is built for a company that operates across the country.
One small local team handles everything: booking, where the container goes, rescheduling and pickup. The Utah line reaches the owner. Not sure where the container fits? Text a photo of your driveway and we will tell you. Need to change a date? Call or text. That is fine unless the truck is already on its way.
Our truck stays on the road, and a machine lifts the container off and sets it anywhere a truck can drive. It is not tipped or dragged like a dumpster. It takes up about one parking stall. Sloped driveway or a tight spot? Send a photo and we will look at it case by case.
How pricing works
U-Haul’s U-Box quote is built from container rental, delivery, pickup and, if you need them, shipping, transit and storage. Your first month and delivery are charged when the boxes arrive, then rent is charged monthly for each container.
What changes a Velox quote: how many containers, how long you keep them, how many times they move, whether you are outside our normal delivery area, a tricky delivery spot, and add-ons like a lock or contents coverage. We usually have a few deals running, so ask.
Three things are true of every Velox rental: no deposit, a one-month minimum, and the monthly rate does not go up after the first month.
When you compare, compare the whole job. A price for one U-Box isn’t comparable to a price for one Velox container, because it takes three or four U-Boxes to match one Velox. More on how Velox pricing works.
When U-Box is the better choice
- You are moving across the country or overseas. U-Haul ships U-Boxes nationwide and internationally. We do not.
- You are moving one room or a studio. A single small box may be all you need.
- You want to haul it yourself. U-Haul rents a trailer that carries one or two U-Boxes.
- Your only open spot is too small for an 8×16 container.
When Velox is the better choice
- You are moving a whole house within Utah or along Colorado’s Front Range. One box, one delivery, one pickup.
- Your load is heavy: food storage, tools, appliances, building materials.
- The container will sit on site for months during a remodel or a new-home build.
- You want one local person to call or text instead of a support queue.

Can you store my container at your yard?
Yes. We have gated yards in Springville and Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Brighton, Colorado. Keeping your container at our yard does not raise the monthly rate. Visits are by appointment: call or text ahead and someone will meet you, unlock it, and lock up after.
Are my belongings insured?
Not automatically, with us or anyone else. Check your homeowners or renters policy first. We also offer third-party coverage up to $20,000 for theft, fire, flood and damage in transport.
